About

Our Approach

Our philosophy. This is how we'll walk you through the world of aviation. Together, we will learn, apply, discover, and volunteer.

A CFI from EAA Chapter 961 will come in to teach us about a new topic in aviation. This will focus on anything from stalls to reading charts, giving you insight into many general aviation topics.

Learn

Apply

The meeting after the lesson will most often be an "apply" session. Here, you will dive deeper into what was gone over last time, have the chance to fly simulators, and do hands on, group activities (plus some competitions, too!).

Discover

Discover is the career-focused part of our group and not exclusive to prospective pilots. We will be looking into engineering, mechanics, air traffic control, and much more to give you a broad view of the field. Here, we'll employ field trips, guest speakers, and other special events.

Volunteering

Our mission.

Special Events/Newcomings

Here are a few of the special events to look forward to.

Young Eagles

Continuing our partnership with EAA Chapter 961, we will do two Young Eagles flights (one per semester). Next year, EVERYONE who wants to fly will get the chance. Again, I'm sorry that this year's Spring event didn't go as planned- but COVID-19 got in the way. Learn more

Boeing Factory Visit

We will try to arrange a visit to Boeing's 787 production plant in Charleston, SC, so stay tuned for news on that.

Simulator Flights

Weekly or biweekly we will be doing flights to all sorts of places on the upcoming Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 using their group flight function. I'll host these on Friday nights, so whoever wants to join is more than welcome. It should a a fun, casual thing to do and a stress-free way to end the week. I've linked the sim's website if you want to take a look. Learn more

Social Media

We set up an Instagram account for the club where we will post photos from our meetings, club trips, and more. This will also be a place for all of our members to show their experiences in aviation. When you go flying, whether in a GA plane or commercially, please send in photos for us to post!

You asked, we listened

Thank you to everyone for the great feedback!

Can the club be more interactive?

Yes! Next year we the majority of the days will be application with a couple of lessons mixed in. This way, you can expect to come to the club and be engaged for 60 minutes.

Can we use flight sims more?

Yes. Next year we will either be using x-Plane or Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 for almost every APPLY session.

People don't talk to each other a lot in the club. Can we change that next year?

I know that to date the club has been a little more individual, with people going with friends and others not interacting a whole lot. We will have a bunch of competitions and other activities next year so we get to know each other and function more as a group.

Can we promote the club to reach a wider audience?

Absolutely! Next year we will do promotional videos, posters, and a bulletin board in the hall pointing out all of our events so that everyone knows what we are all about. I'm aware of the stigma around being an aviation club, and we will definitely defy that to become a fun, interactive, and informative group all at the same time.

The club should have a deeper focus on career opportunities...

This I totally agree with, and that's why if you look at the schedule we have a whole month blocked out for it. Further, we will have presentations and career oriented field trips throughout the year with visits from military officers, commercial pilots, engineers, flight planners, and others!

We should have a regular schedule with biweekly meetings on the same day each time.

The calendar is organized in a more biweekly way, but also aimed at providing two meetings each month (so with holidays it gets shifted around). As for the suggestion about same days- I understand it is pretty confusing to have meetings on different days each week, so we will stick to Monday's with few exceptions. However, club events could be any day of the week.
